The new generation BMW M4 Coupe was taken to the Nurburgring for another round of testing, revealing the sound produced by its inline-six engine as the factory driver was pushing it.

Sourced from the new X3 M and X4 M, the 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six will be offered in two outputs, with the regular M3 and M4 models churning out 473 HP (480 PS / 353 kW) and the Competition versions having 503 HP (510 PS / 375 kW).

The biggest change, compared to the current M3/M4 range, will be the introduction of an M-tuned xDrive all-wheel drive system. This will turn it into an all-weather machine, but at the push of a button, drivers will be able to disconnect the front driveshafts, turning it into a RWD car again, similar to the latest M5.

It appears that the scooped prototype was equipped with an automatic transmission with eight speeds, but the lineup will be completed by a manual gearbox. The stick shift variant was already confirmed and we saw it in another M4 Coupe prototype a couple of weeks ago.

The camouflage has yet to come off, but the design of the new M4 isn’t the best-preserved secret, as several leaks have revealed that it will have a huge double-coffin grille. The interior will be very similar to the 3-Series G20, albeit with a few M add-ons, and that’s hardly a surprise, as the 4-Series is the same car with a different body style.

It’s been reported that the new M4, as well as the four-door M3, will be presented in the coming months, and the first units should arrive at dealers before the end of the year.
