Deliveries of the long-awaited Tesla Model Y kicked off earlier this year and while the electric crossover is reaching the hands of customers earlier than originally expected, complaints about build quality shortcomings have started to surface on social media discussions. The video below from Car Confections outlines a number of issues with one particular blue Model Y.
Like the Model 3, the Model Y features very inconsistent panel gaps. This is particularly evident with the openings around the frunk that go from very narrow at the sides to very wide at the front, just below the Tesla badge. One of the more evident problems is how the black door trim doesn’t line up neatly on one side of the vehicle. The reviewer also notes that the inner wheel arches do not correctly match up with the side skirts.

Spin around to the rear and there are more things to whine about. For starters, moisture has started to build up in one of the taillights. The reviewer then moves to what he refers to as the most egregious fault, showing that the electric tailgate gets stuck while a few inches open before opening up fully.
There are more problems diagnosed in the cabin, including an issue which we think could prove to be quite annoying to users; one of the latches supposedly used to automatically fold down the passenger-side rear seat doesn’t actually do anything, so you’re forced to manually fold down the seat. Speaking of the seats, there is a snag with the carpeted back of the center seat getting caught on a piece of trim when folding the seat back upright.
It’s important to note that many automakers encounter build quality hiccups with newly introduced models. More often than not, they are rectified as production continues and matures. We expect Tesla to work through these teething problems like it did with the Model 3.
