BMW introduced the X5 xDrive45e nearly two years ago, and now the company has revealed it will arrive in the United States next month.
Set to start at $65,400, the plug-in hybrid crossover will cost $4,200 more than the 2020 X5 xDrive40i. That’s not bad considering the X5 xDrive45e is more powerful and offers an electric-only range of approximately 30 miles (48 km).
Speaking of the powertrain, the crossover is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor that produces 111 hp (83 kW / 113 PS) and 77 lb-ft (104 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to have a combined output of 389 hp (290 kW / 394 PS) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque. That’s 54 hp (40 kW / 55 PS) and 113 lb-ft (153 Nm) more than the X5 xDrive40i.

In terms of performance, the crossover can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.3 seconds before hitting a top speed of up to 146 mph (235 km/h). The plug-in hybrid also boasts a tow capacity of 7,200 lbs (3,266 kg) and can be fully recharged in as little as 5.3 hours.
Besides the eco-friendly powertrain, the X5 xDrive45e has an air suspension, adaptive LED headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels. Buyers will also find Sensatec upholstery, wood trim and a panoramic glass sunroof. Rounding out the highlights are heated front seats, an ambient lighting system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
The crossover also features a host of driver assistance systems including Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Active Blind Spot Detection. There’s also Speed Limit Information and Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation.
An assortment of options will be available including leather seats, a head-up display and a wireless smartphone charger. Customers can also opt for a four-zone climate control system, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant.
