Custom cars require custom engines, although stumbling upon the perfect one usually requires digging through scrap yards and taking chances with all sorts of power units that may require additional work.
Fortunately, there are several crate engines that you can buy from different companies, and the latest one comes from Chevrolet. The bowtie brand has dubbed it the LS427/570 and it’s based on the 7.0-liter found in the C6 Corvette Z06 and Camaro Z/28.
The naturally aspirated lump boasts a lot of mods compared to the regular version that include, among others, unique high-lift hydraulic roller camshaft, high-rate valve springs, low-profile intake manifold with fuel rails, injectors and throttle body, 14-inch Z/28 168-tooth manual transmission flywheel, fifth-gen Camaro Z/28 exhaust manifolds and more.

The result is an estimated 570 horsepower (578 PS / 425 kW) and 540 lb-ft (732 Nm) of torque. This represents an increase of 65 HP and 70 lb-ft (95 Nm) over the regular production engine. The GM-owned brand states that the new wet-sump oiling system makes it easier to install the unit, as it doesn’t require a separate oil tank, oil lines and other auxiliary components.
“The all-new LS427/570 builds on the legendary, racing-bred performance of the LS7 to create the most powerful naturally aspirated LS crate engine in our portfolio”, said GM specialist marketing group manager, Jessica Earl.
Chevy’s new crate engine, which is “intended for competition use only”, is already available to order at Chevrolet Performance dealers and retailers across the nation.
