A lawsuit levied against Ford claims the six-speed manual transmission found in 2011MY-2019MY Mustang models is defective.
The lawsuit, first filed in California last year, claims that the Mustang’s MT82 transmission was designed for cars “with much lower horsepower” than the Mustang and that Ford and Getrag didn’t re-engineer the transmission sufficiently for use in the Mustang.

“The transmission is defective in its design, manufacturing, and or materials in that, among other problems, the transmission slips, jerks, clashes gears, and harshly engages; has premature internal wear, increased shift efforts, inability to drive, and eventually suffers a catastrophic failure,” the lawsuit alleges. “Ford repeatedly failed to disclose and actively concealed the defect from class members and the public and continues to market the class vehicles without disclosing the transmission defect.”
Auto News adds that Ford sent out seven Technical Service Bulletins and special service messages over the years to deal with the issue and directed service departments to replace the third/fourth shift forks, third/fourth gear synchronizer hubs and sleeves, countershaft third gears, the shift lever, clutch pedal position switches, and the brackets, while also draining the refiling the gearbox. Ford ultimately replaced the MT82 with the MT82-D4 used in Mustangs from the 2018 model year but owners claim the D4 version also suffers from the same problems.
The suit is seeking $5 million in damages and is pursuing class-action status. Ford has said the problems described in the lawsuit are the result of wear and tear.
