If you happen to have a Mazda MX-5 NC sitting on your driveway desperately needing some love, then the famous UK-based BBR specialists are here for you.
The tuner has updated its naturally aspirated “Super 225” upgrade package for the NC generation of the 2.0-liter MX-5. BBR promises 224 HP (225 PS) at 7550rpm and 174 lb-ft (236 Nm) of torque at 5950 rpm, with more than 150 lb-ft available from 3000rpm.
This is an improvement of 67 HP and 36 lb-ft over the standard engine’s output while retaining the OEM engine management system. BBR was able to modify the intake side of the engine with a set of bespoke, drive-by-wire 45mm billet alloy independent throttle bodies, giving the MX-5 NC a loud intake bark only a high-performance naturally aspirated four-pot engine can produce.

The package also includes new intake and exhaust camshafts, a bespoke drive-by-wire system that’s perfectly integrated into the OEM ECU, new 3.5-inch tailpipes, and more.
“The main challenge for our development program was optimizing the intake side of the engine by switching to bespoke independent throttle bodies,” says BBR’s Neil McKay, “while retaining the standard Mazda Denso engine management system and under bonnet layout.”
“To maximize performance the OEM Mazda MAF sensor and plenum chamber are dispensed with for the Super 225 conversion, but the original factory drive by wire throttle configuration is retained and integrated into the BBR independent throttle body set up.”
The ‘Super 225’ package is priced at £3495 ($4,336) for those wishing to install it themselves and at £4295 ($5,328) for a drive-in, drive-out installation at BBR’s headquarters in Brackley, UK. Owners of NC MX-5s already fitted with the ‘Super 200’ package can also upgrade to the ‘Super 225’ for £2495 ($3,095) fitted.
