China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has stolen VW’s thunder by revealing the all-new ID.4 electric SUV ahead of schedule.

As the drill is in China before a model gets launched, carmakers submit completely uncensored photos of their upcoming models which the MIIT then posts on its website. That’s exactly what happened to the ID.4, which has been exposed in all its battery-powered glory.

The electric SUV appears to offer two flavors in China: the grey model in the photos is the ID.4 X while the white one is the ID.4 Crozz – yes, the double ‘Z’ makes its appearance for the first time on a VW production model.

The design language is very obviously closely related to the ID.3 hatchback and brings no surprises whatsoever – especially if you’re familiar with preceding concepts and spy shots.

According to official information picked up by Auto Sina, the ID.4 X and ID.4 Crozz share the 2,765 mm (108.8 in) wheelbase and 1,852 mm (72.9 in) width, but have different lengths and heights. The ID.4 X is 4,612 mm (181.6 in) long and 1,640 mm (64.5 in) tall, while the ID.4 Crozz is slightly shorter and lower at 4,592 mm (180.8 in) and 1,629 mm (64.1 in), respectively. The variations are attributable to the different bumper designs and ride heights.

Both models will be built by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture in China based on the MEB electric vehicle architecture. A 150 kW (204 PS / 201 HP) electric motor shared with higher-end ID.3 models is found in the ID.4 X and ID.4 Crozz, likely mounted on the rear axle just like in the hatchback.

The battery choices should be similar, with the biggest one enabling a range of around 500 km (310 miles) as per NEDC. In the photos we can also identify two trim levels: a 1st Edition and a PRO. The VW ID.4 X and ID.4 Crozz will reportedly arrive in Chinese dealerships later this year.
