At least two people have been arrested and a man and a woman shot by police for their involvement in the ransacking of the San Leandro Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM SRT dealership in California on Sunday, May 31.

In the midst of widespread looting across the United States in response to the death of George Floyd while under police custody on May 25, thieves stole a reported 74 vehicles from the dealership, many of them expensive Hellcat models.

Last Monday, the California Highway Patrol announced it had arrested two men following a call of a stolen vehicle speeding on northbound Interstate 5. The duo were driving a Dodge Journey that was being tracked by an internal GPS from the dealership.

Fox 2 KTVU reports a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop the stolen Journey but the driver failed to yield, triggering a pursuit that lasted for 13 miles (21 km) and saw the Dodge reach speeds of 100 mph (160 km/h). The two suspects, 20-year-olds Kahleel Anthony Kaplin and Aaron Duval Powell III, were arrested after the Journey ran out of fuel.

In a separate incident this past Saturday, California Highway Patrol officers reportedly shot and killed 22-year-old Erik Salgado who was behind the wheel of a red 2018 Dodge Challenger that was allegedly stolen from the San Leandro Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM SRT dealership. His pregnant girlfriend was also shot and wounded and is currently in a stable condition in hospital, Fox 2 KTVU report.

It is understood both were shot in the 9600 block of Cherry Street in Oakland. Salgado was pronounced dead at the scene after police reportedly fired more than 40 shots from assault rifles.

At least 15 of the stolen vehicles have been recovered.
