Volkswagen has kicked off deliveries of the ID. Charger Wallbox in Europe, where it can be ordered online or from official dealers in eight countries, at an introductory price of €399 (equal to $453).

Developed with the new ID. family of electric vehicles in mind, including the ID.3 compact hatchback, the wallbox can be used to charge all other electric cars that feature a Type 2 connector.

The pricing doesn’t include installation, but the automaker claims to have teamed up with certified electrical contractors for this.

“In the past, buying a wallbox was often a tiresome and long-winded exercise for customers. We want to change that and are offering a single-source solution for the ID. Charger – from purchase and installation to commissioning”, said Peter Diekmann, the Key Account Manager at the VW subsidiary Elli, which is responsible for the ID. Charger.

Initially, you can only order the base version, although later you’ll be able to purchase the ID. Charger Connect and ID. Charger Pro. All of them have a charging capacity of up to 11 kW and feature a Type 2 charging cable and integrated DC residual current.

The two top variants will feature enhanced connectivity, with customers being able to control the charging process, enjoy the remote maintenance and manage the access via a charge card by using their smartphones. They will also get regular software updates. The Pro model will add an integrated electricity meter that can be used to bill the electricity costs for company car drivers.

The ID. Charger Connect and Charger Pro are priced at €599 and €849 ($680-$964) respectively.
