The facelifted 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S was recently unveiled and the company is putting the model through its paces at the Nurburgring.

While the prototype in this video is still wearing some camouflaged tape across its front end, that’s likely because engineers have been testing this particular prototype since before the car’s unveiling and simply haven’t bothered taking it off. After all, it seems unlikely that Mercedes is readying an even more potent version of the car, perhaps akin to the BMW M5 CS.

Slotted in beneath the hood of the facelifted E 63 S is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that is good for 603 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque in both Sedan and Wagon guises. Paired to the engine is an AMG Speedshift nine-speed dual-clutch transmission that drives all four wheels. Much like the pre-facelift model, the new E 63 S features AWD but it can be driven in rear-wheel drive only mode if you’re in the mood to spin up the rear tires and leave some black rubber on the pavement.

While the E 63 S is a big heavy brute, this video shows that in a straight line and even through some of the Nurburgring’s most difficult corners, it is very quick indeed. Will owners ever take their cars to the track? The vast majority probably not, but it is nice to know the E 63 S won’t fall apart on a twisty mountain road.

Pricing details for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Sedan and Wagon are still to be announced.
