The coronavirus pandemic has cancelled countless auto shows and it’s partially claimed another event.
This time it’s CES, which is a tech-focused event that has been transformed into a mini auto show over the past few years.
While the show will still go on, it’s being turned into an “all-digital experience” for 2021. A lot of details remain unclear, but organizers are promising an “immersive experience, where attendees will have a front row seat to discover and see the latest technology.” They went on to say the digital format will enable people worldwide to see cutting-edge technologies and the latest product launches.

It remains to be seen if exhibitors will embrace the new format, but the changes are a sign of the times. As Consumer Technology Association President and CEO Gary Shapiro explained, “Amid the pandemic and growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19, it’s just not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people in Las Vegas in early January 2021 to meet and do business in person.”
He went on to say, “Technology helps us all work, learn and connect during the pandemic – and that innovation will also help us reimagine CES 2021 and bring together the tech community in a meaningful way.”
The digital show will take place between January 6th and January 9th. However, CES plans to return to a physical event in 2022 and it will incorporate some of the best elements of the digital show as well.
CES’s decision to go digital is interesting as SEMA – which also takes place in Las Vegas – is planning to hold a traditional event in November. However, SEMA will have extra safety precautions including temperature checks, mandatory face masks and adherence to social distancing guidelines.
