Buick has yet to offer plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles in the United States but it already does so in China, its largest market worldwide.

Following the release of the extended-range Velite 6 EV last year, the automaker has now introduced the Velite 6 PHEV, which combines the best of both worlds. The Buick eMotion plug-in hybrid system combines dual electric motors powered by an LG lithium-ion battery pack and a dedicated 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine for hybrid systems.

Thanks to the electric motors and an electronic continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), the Velite 6 PHEV has a claimed average fuel economy as low as 1.4 l/100 km (168 mpg US). More importantly, the pure electric driving range is estimated at 60 kilometers (37 miles), while the combined range reaches a comfortable 780 kilometers (484 miles).

The plug-in hybrid MAV (Multi-Activity Vehicle) also benefits from advanced Power Split technology, available in both hybrid and pure electric modes. According to Buick, the tech will “enhance the driving experience with additional ease and comfort”.

“Leveraging cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology, the Velite 6 will offer no compromises in vehicle performance or driving range, making it an ideal option for both daily commuting and long-distance traveling,” said Molly Peck, executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM.

With the arrival of the Velite 6 PHEV later this month in China, Buick says it will further solidify its pioneering position in the NEV segment in the world’s largest market. Besides EVs and plug-in hybrids, the GM-owned brand also offers 48-volt mild-hybrid vehicles in the Asian market.
