Cupra Tavascan’s Fate Uncertain, Production Electric Crossover Is Still On Hold

With the constant expansion of the range, the launch of the Formentor and the unveiling of the El-Born, Cupra has a lot to chew on, but if there’s one model that fans are still looking forward to, it’s the Tavascan.

Unveiled in concept form at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, it is a sporty electric crossover with a futuristic design, driver-oriented cockpit that still has to be toned down for production, and decent grunt to match its looks.

For now, the Tavascan seems to remain nothing more than a show car, as Cupra appears to have put a pin in it. Citing the company’s head honcho Wayne Griffiths, Auto Express reports that nothing has been decided when it comes to this model, even though the SEAT-owned brand eventually wants to see it in showrooms.

“The Tavascan is still a project we are working on, I think it is a car we really need particularly for the Cupra brand and the concept got excellent reception”, Griffiths said. “But we still haven’t made a final decision on development of manufacturing of the car. I am pushing for it. With all the other things we have on our plate, we have enough on at the moment, launching the Cupra brand and plug-in hybrid versions. Our product range has gone from zero to six, seven, eight cars very fast,” the executive explained.

The chief of design for SEAT and Cupra, Alejandro Mesonero, also admitted that the decision is still pending. “Nothing has been decided 100 percent yet, but our idea is to come back in the next few years with something extremely similar to this.”

Built on the VW Group’s MEB platform, which is dedicated to EVs, the Tavascan Concept packs two electric motors at the front and another one at the rear. Its total system output of 302 HP (306 PS / 225 kW) enables a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) of 6.5 seconds. A 77 kWh lithium-ion battery gives the Tavascan a WLTP-rated range of up to 280 miles (450 km).
