Back in April this year, Chinese media reported that the Wuling brand had plans to go global, with three models to fuel its expansion.
According to slides from an internal presentation that leaked online, one of the models will be an SUV presented under the Ursa name at the time. Now, the brand owned by the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture has revealed official teaser images of the concept version of the SUV, which will be known as the Hong Guang X.
Comparing the teaser images with those from the leaked presentation makes it pretty clear that we’re talking about the same vehicle. Why the different names, then? Well, Wuling will probably name the SUV Ursa in export markets, with the Hong Guang X nameplate reserved for the domestic market.

Wuling does not reveal much about the Hong Guang X, which is its first concept vehicle featuring the brand’s new silver badge. The short press blurb talks about a “unique exterior complemented by a space-maximizing interior, for a stylish and roomy ride”. The automaker adds that the SUV “carries forward the brand’s bold contemporary three-dimensional stereoscopic styling to cater to the preferences of the younger generation”.
Looking at the side view, the Wuling Hong Guang X appears to have a rugged appearance with squared wheel arches featuring plastic cladding, suicide doors, and a chunky body-colored C-pillar that stands out because all the other pillars are painted black.
The front end features split LED headlights with a slim bar at the top that communicates with the winged logo and X-shaped DRLs further below. Out back, we can spot the vertical LED taillights connected to one another by an illuminated strip that has the Wuling badge at its center.
Stay tuned for more details soon as the Hong Guang X Concept will debut at the Chengdu Motor Show on July 24, alongside the new Victory MPV.
