Not long after it was revealed that General Motors had been awarded a multi-million-dollar contract to produce the U.S. Army’s Colorado ZR2-based Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV), it seems possible the forthcoming GMC Hummer EV could spawn a military vehicle of its own.
The GMC Hummer EV is one of the most important vehicles in GM’s electrification plans and will take the form of a pickup truck, likely a crew cab-style model. A recent teaser image has revealed the truck will feature removable roof panels, further broadening its appeal.

While recently having a chat with GM Defense president David Albritton about the company’s new military contract, GM Authority was told that the Hummer EV could serve as the base for some kind of military vehicle.
“GM has announced that it is coming out with a [GMC] Hummer battery electric truck in 2021,” Albritton stated. “It’s a full-size truck with 400 miles of range, 1,000 foot-pounds of torque, a very highly-capable vehicle. That could provide a great base platform for an electric vehicle to be used in the military context.”
While Albritton didn’t definitely state such a vehicle will be built, he said “we’d [GM Defense] like to position ourselves as the company that can provide those kinds of capabilities if or when they’re needed [by the client].”
The road-going GMC Hummer EV will churn out 1,000 hp in addition to its astronomical torque figure and should be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in three seconds.
Hummer has a very proud history in providing the U.S. military with vehicles and it would only be fitting for it to make a return to duty. However, we’re not sure how GM would overcome the lack of charging facilities on the battlefield.
