Gordon Murray Automotive has revealed the upcoming T.50 supercar will be powered by a bespoke Cosworth V12 engine.
Displacing 3.9-liters, the engine promises to be the “highest revving, fastest responding, most power dense and lightest naturally aspirated V12” ever used in a road-going model.
Jumping right into the numbers, Gordon Murray Automotive says the engine has 654 hp (488 kW / 663 PS) and 344 lb-ft (467 Nm) of torque. The latter figure is produced at 9,000 rpm, but the company says 71% of the engine’s torque comes from as low as 2,500 rpm to ensure day-to-day driveability.

Speaking of revs, the engine redlines at 12,100 rpm. It’s also super responsive as the company says it goes from idle to redline in 0.3 seconds.
Speaking of performance, the engine has a 48-volt integrated starter-generator. In Vmax Mode, it delivers a boost of approximately 49 hp (37 kW / 50 PS).
As for the engine itself, it’s constructed out of a high-strength aluminum alloy. It also has a lightweight steel crankshaft that weighs 18.6 lbs (13 kg). Elsewhere, there are a number of titanium components including connecting rods, valves and the clutch housing. Thanks to this focus on weight, the engine only weighs 392 lbs (178 kg) which is pretty remarkable for a V12.
Gordon Murray Automotive says the engine draws inspiration from the 3.3-liter V12 in the Ferrari 250 GTO, the 3.5-liter Honda V12 in McLaren MP4/6 Formula One cars, and the BMW S70/2 V12 used in the McLaren F1. The general idea was to take all the things that were great about these engines and improve them even further.
Murray also wanted the engine to look like an engine, so it isn’t hidden behind an assortment of covers. As he explained, “Above all else, I wanted it to look clean like the BMW S70/2 engine, which had no carbon or plastic covers. It was just inlet trumpets, cam covers, exhaust block and heads, and a few belt-driven ancillaries that I managed to squeeze out of sight.”
Murray went on to say he started his career as an engine designer, so creating a bespoke V12 for the T.50 was a joyous experience. As he stated, “Having a blank sheet of paper and setting out to create the world’s best, highest-revving, most beautifully crafted, amazing sounding engine is something I’ve been waiting to do for years!”
The engine will be connected to an six-speed manual transmission that weighs 177.5 lbs (80.5 kg) and features the “best gearchange in the world.” It has an aluminum housing, short throws and five close ratios geared for acceleration.
While the company didn’t mention how fast the T.50 will be, the model will be unveiled on August 4th at 17:00 BST (12:00 pm EST).
