The Cosworth 3.9-liter naturally aspirated V12 of Gordon Murray’s T.50 supercar is edging closer to being road ready.
This remarkable engine will be able to rev through to 12,100 rpm and, back in March, a three-cylinder version of the V12 was pushed through to this redline. Fast forward to July and Cosworth has built the complete V12 which, in this video, is shown being revved to 8,000 rpm.
As you would imagine, the Cosworth V12 produces an intoxicating cacophony as the revs build. We can’t begin to imagine what it’ll sound like when the company decides to test it to its limits and use that extra 4,100 rpm.

It’s not just the high-revving nature of the T.50’s engine that will make it special, but also the fact that it will rev from idle to the redline in just 0.3 seconds.
When the T.50 was first announced, Gordon Murray said it would deliver 650 hp and 331 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. However, tests have already shown it is good for 672 hp, a figure that should rise when taking into account the ram induction system used by the car. Completing the drivetrain will be a 48-volt integrated starter generator and a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.
Much like its spiritual predecessor, the McLaren F1, the T.50 has been designed to be exceptionally light and will tip the scales at just 2,160 lbs (980 kg). It will also use a 400 mm electric fan mounted at the back that will suck up air from under the car and drastically increase downforce.
