Jaguar is looking to trademark the name ‘Jaguar EV-TYPE’, sparking rumors that the British car manufacturer could be eying an electric sports car.

The trademark was applied in mid-February and is still pending. The name is an obvious reference to the iconic Jaguar E-Type and it is possible the EV-Type name could be used for the successor to the current F-Type.

Autocar reports that Jaguar has yet to decide what form the F-Type’s successor will take. Last year, former design director Ian Callum created a blueprint for a next-generation sports that would be mid-engined and have a design inspired by the C-X75 concept. However, it is understood that Jaguar is also considering a proposal for an F-Type successor that retains its front-engined layout.

Arguably the toughest challenge for Jaguar would be finding an architecture to use for a new electric sports car. The brand doesn’t currently have such a platform available and may only be able to find one if it strengthens its technical alliance with BMW and enters into some kind of platform-sharing agreement to join the current powertrain-sharing agreement. Theoretically, a platform could be shared between the next-generation BMW i8 and the so-called Jaguar EV-Type.

It is also possible the EV-Type could take some inspiration from the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe concept unveiled last year. That car used powertrain technology from Jaguar’s Formula E team and thanks to four electric motors, was rated at 1,006 hp, although it was not a real concept but a virtual one designed for the Gran Turismo Sport video game.
