Mugen’s New Honda Civic Type R Upgrades Are Not For Introverts

Roughly 18 months after being previewed in prototype guise, Mugen’s modified Honda Civic Type R has been presented in full.

The world caught its first glimpse of Mugen’s Civic Type R at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2019. The production model looks pretty much identical to the prototype and adds some new visual flair to the Japanese hot hatch, not that it needed it.

Up front, Mugen’s raft of modifications includes a new splitter, different air intake shrouds, and a new carbon fiber hood filled with vents. This hood, by the way, will set back customers in Japan the equivalent of $10,200.

Elsewhere, Mugen has developed 20-inch black and silver wheels for the car, a set of extended side skirts, and new wing mirror caps. Standing out at the rear are unique taillights with distinctive graphics, an edgy new diffuser, and new dual tailpipes as opposed to the triple-pipe layout of the regular Type R. The most obvious modification at the rear is the fitment of a custom rear wing that can be manually adjusted. This wing costs $9,307 when made from fiberglass and $13,296 in carbon fiber.

Other modifications made include a carbon fiber and leather steering wheel, striped Recaro bucket seats finished in Alcantara, a quick-shift kit with a modified return spring, aluminum gear shift knob, new floor mats, and a Mugen start button. Mugen has also developed a new oil filter, engine treatment oil, and brake pads.
