Top Gear has become a global phenomenon and that’s largely due to Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
However, have you ever wondered how Hammond got the gig that would transform his life?
If you did, you’re in luck as The Grand Tour star has revealed the story in a new YouTube video. In the clip, Hammond explains that he meet Clarkson, script editor Richard Porter and executive producer Andy Wilman and had to do an audition with a car.

Hammond thought he bombed the tryout and “went home quite sad” because he thought the show was going to be amazing and he wouldn’t be part of it. However, Hammond got a call several months later and was asked to join Top Gear. He was understandably happy about that, and burst into tears before opening a bottle of champagne.
Hammond went on to reveal he produced a demo reel that featured his company car which was a Renault Laguna. Later, at the audition, he had to walk around and talk about the Skoda Superb.
Hammond went to say that Clarkson and Wilman joked the only reason he got the job was that he showed up in a “completely crap” 1982 Porsche 911 SC. He also joked about having to “get back to the Nam” which was short for Cheltenham.
As for what would have happened if he didn’t get the job, Hammond thinks he would have stuck with ITV and, presumably, continued working on Men & Motors. However, he originally wanted to be an architect.
