Tesla doesn’t stick to traditional model year changes as they prefer to update their lineup as they see fit.
This occasionally creates confusion and anger, but it appears the Model S and Model X are about to receive a major update.
While nothing is official, Electrek is reporting the company is working on a secret project code-named “Palladium.” Little is known about it at this point, but the project is reportedly focused on the Model S and Model X.

The changes appear to be pretty significant as the publication says the project involves building new production lines and there’s even mention of new Palladium bodies. The latter suggests the vehicles will receive some styling changes and that’s overdue as the Model S still looks the same as it did in 2017. The Model X, on the other hand, looks like it did in 2015.
The update is also said to include “new battery modules and drive units.” The changes will reportedly allow for high-performance Plaid variants and it’s likely the vehicles will benefit from improvements set to be announced at Tesla’s battery day event in September.
It remains unclear if there will be any other changes, but previous reports have suggested Tesla was working on an updated Model S with an interior that echoes the one used in the Model 3. It was believed the updates would include a minimalist dashboard and a floating infotainment system similar to the one used on the Model 3.
Of course, those rumors suggested the updated Model S would have been unveiled last September and that obviously didn’t happen. However, the same report said the company would increase the car’s range to 400 miles (644 km) and that did pan out as the Model S Long Range Plus can now travel 402 miles (647 km) between charges.
