Ford has been filmed testing an odd Mustang Mach-E prototype in North Carolina, performing quick accelerations with the car and a series of smoky donuts and handbrake turns.

It is understood this video was filmed along an empty area of pavement at the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research. The person behind the camera was subtly hiding behind some trees at the testing facility when they spotted the prototype on the move. Some speculate the video may have been staged and perhaps actually filmed by someone from Ford. Regardless of whether or not that is the case, it is clear that Ford is up to something.

The first thing you’ll notice about this vehicle is that it lacks the front and rear fascias of the road-going Mustang Mach-E and is perhaps being used solely for powertrain development. There appears to be both a front seat passenger and at least one rear-seat passenger in the car.

Looking closely at the prototype, a set of two large cooling fans can be seen at the front while there are also three cooling fans at the rear. In addition, there is a bright red roll cage in the car. The presence of these fans has led some to suggest the car may have more power than the standard Mach-E GT that is rated at 459 hp and 612 lb-ft (828 Nm) of torque.

The car is also very clearly all-wheel drive and at times, suffers from a bit of understeer as the driver tries to kick out the tail. Ultimately, they are able to do so and string together a number of impressive drifts.

If this is indeed an official project from Ford, we can expect to hear more about it moving forward.
