The new Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S models are perfect for anyone undecided on whether to purchase a new Porsche 911 as a Coupe or as a Cabriolet. However, it is not just the cool looks and versatility of the new 911 Targa models that make them so appealing, as Jason from Engineering Explained recently discovered in his first review of the sports car.
Powering the new 911 Targa is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that, in the flagship Targa 4S model that Jason tested, is rated at 444 hp and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm) of torque. For those that don’t need that much grunt, the Targa 4 is capped at 380 hp at 6,500 rpm and 331 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque.

While this engine is turbocharged and not naturally aspirated like other 911 models of yesteryear, it is still an exceptionally potent powertrain. Jason notes that there is very little noticeable turbo lag and appears particularly fond of the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that Porsche uses and has replaced the previous seven-speed PDK. He notes that the gear ratios in the first seven gears are shorter, resulting in better acceleration, while the eighth gear is perfect for highway cruising.
In a straight line, Porsche says the Targa 4S hits 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds. However, Jason was actually able to hit 60 mph in a GPS-verified 3.3 seconds, a seriously impressive figure for a 911 that is this comfortable and enjoyable to drive for long distances.
