The latest episode in the new Rolls-Royce Ghost teaser campaign has highlighted the science behind keeping occupants cocooned from the outside environment.

The luxury saloon’s 6.75-liter V12 engine has been insulated from the cabin, with a double-skinned bulkhead section. Then, sound-absorbing materials, weighing more than 220 pounds (100 kg), were added in the roof, floor and boot areas, in addition to the double-glazed windows and tires lined with lightweight acoustic insulation foam.

When they checked the acoustics, engineers found that the HVAC ducts needed to be further smoothed to prevent unwanted noises from entering the cockpit.

However, removing all noises turned out to be disorientating for occupants, so the carmaker eventually created a ‘whisper’, which is “a soft undertone that clients experienced as a single, subtle note”. Each component had to be tuned to a specific resonant frequency, so they created acoustically tuned damping units for the seat frames and several ports between the cabin and the 17.6 cu-ft (500-liter) boot.

“The extraordinary acoustic quality of new Ghost is the result of significant engineering developments and fastidious attention to detail, but it really is underpinned by the marque’s proprietary aluminum architecture”, commented Tom Davis-Reason, Accoustic Engineering Lead for the new Ghost. “There is simply no way we could have created such an acoustically refined environment using a steel platform.”

Detailed in the animated film shared below, this process was dubbed ‘Formula for Serenity’, and will be just one of the highlights of the 2021 Ghost, which will officially premiere this fall.
