Ever since the unveiling of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, we’ve seen videos of the all-electric sedan out-accelerating almost any car imaginable. Surely it can’t also defeat a McLaren P1 down the quarter-mile?
To find out, the guys over at Lovecars brought along a black Taycan Turbo S and a yellow P1 for a drag race. Making the race all the more special is the fact that this P1 was one of the original prototypes used in the development of the hybrid hypercar.
Off the line, the all-electric thrust and all-wheel drive system of the Porsche give it a significant advantage. Meanwhile, the P1 suffered from quite a bit of wheel spin off the line because it has 916 hp and is rear-wheel drive.

For quite some time, the Porsche kept its advantage down the runway. However, as the speeds started to increase, the much lighter and more powerful McLaren quickly caught up to the Porsche and stormed past it.
A look at the acceleration figures reveals just how much of an impact the slippery runway had on the P1’s ability to get out of the blocks. In fact, it took the McLaren a full 3.65 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h), much slower than the car’s official 0-62 mph time of 2.8 seconds.
The P1 ultimately crossed the finish line in 10.68 seconds at 149.8 mph (241 km/h). By comparison, the Taycan Turbo S hit 62 mph in 2.7 seconds and finished the quarter-mile in 10.82 seconds at 127.5 mph (205 km/h).
