A handful of Corvette C8 owners have complained that the car’s frunk can unexpectedly open while driving.
Now the frunk is the subject of a recall, but it’s probably not the one you were expecting.
As noticed by Road & Track, the mid-engine sports car is being recalled because a small child could potentially get trapped inside the frunk. While the chances of this happening are slim, the recall notes certain 2020 Corvettes fail to comply with safety regulations that require trunks be equipped with an escape feature.

As the recall explained, the Corvette enters a “low-power ‘sleep’ mode” ten minutes after being turned off. However, when this occurs, it prevents the trunk release button inside the frunk from working.
The recall went on to say that if the frunk is left open, “a small person who climbs inside … and closes the trunk lid … may not be able to get out without assistance, increasing the risk of injury.”
Thankfully, the company already has a fix as they’ll provide a software update which will lower the voltage required to wake the vehicle from sleep mode. They said this will enable the trunk release button to work even when the vehicle is ‘sleeping.’
The change will be delivered via an over-the-air update. Owners can also take their car into a dealer to have the update performed by them.
As for reports of the frunk flying open while driving, GM told The Drive that owners are apparently leaving them open on accident. As a result, they’re looking to address the issue by updating warnings to make sure drivers know their frunk isn’t fully closed.
