The Land Rover Defender V8 has put on a tux for the latest testing session at the Nurburgring.
Spied by our photographers, the prototype also featured red brake calipers, suggesting perhaps that these have been upgraded over the regular models for improved stopping power.
While there is no way to verify that information yet, we do know that it will need all the help it can get to come to a standstill quicker, as it’s expected to tip the scales at well over 2 tons (4,400+ lbs). The V8 engine will make it the fastest production version Defender ever, and despite not being part of the more exclusive SVR family, it will probably rock the 5.0-liter supercharged lump.

This engine, which is found under the hood of several JLR vehicles, should leave the company’s portfolio in a few months, so we are inclined to think that if the range-topping Defender uses this unit, then it could be offered in limited numbers. The exact output is unknown, but previous reports spoke about roughly 500 HP.
Besides being feistier than ever and featuring an upgraded braking system, the Defender V8 is also understood to come with standard air suspension, yet despite boasting an improved prowess on the tarmac, it will not sacrifice its off-road capability.
Even though it looks just about ready to hit showrooms, the Defender V8 should remain in the testing phase for at least a few more months, as it could premiere in the first half of 2021.
