Supercars have come a long way in the past 30 years and to prove this, Lovecars recently gathered together a Ferrari F40 and a 488 Pista Spider for a drag race.

Although the F40 and 488 Pista are separated by roughly three decades, they do share some commonalities, apart from the obvious fact that they are both Ferraris. Most notably, the duo both feature twin-turbocharged, mid-mounted V8 engines and have rear-wheel drive.

More specifically, the F40 rocks a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V8 with 471 hp at 7,000 rpm and 426 lb-ft (577 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm that’s mated to a manual transmission. The 488 Pista Spider, on the other hand, uses a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 with 710 hp at 8,000 rpm and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque from just 3,000 rpm and sports a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

It is hardly a surprise that off the line, the 488 has a significant advantage. However, in this drag race, Tiff Needell who was driving the F40 got an excellent launch and was actually ahead of the 488 for the first part of the race. However, as he manually shifted through the gears, the Pista disappeared into the distance.

A look at the timing sheets show the 488 needed 3.38 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) and ran down the quarter-mile in 11.17 seconds. By comparison, the F40 needed 5.34 seconds to hit 62 mph and completed the quarter-mile in 12.74 seconds.
