The subcompact crossover segment is booming, but that leaves GMC in an awkward position as the brand doesn’t offer one.
It’s even more perplexing when you consider Chevrolet has the Trax and Buick has the Encore. In fact, both brands recently added another small crossover in the form of the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX.
The Trailblazer starts at $19,995 while the Encore GX begins at $25,095. Both undercut GMC’s entry-level crossover which is the Terrain that starts at $26,195.

However, a new report suggests GMC is considering filling the gap in their lineup. GM Authority says the company is close to green-lighting a new subcompact crossover and it would be based on the same platform that underpins the Trailblazer and Encore GX.
Little else is known about the model at this point, but it would reportedly be “highly differentiated” from its corporate cousins. This likely means we can expect unique styling inside and out.
However, engine options would likely carryover and include a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder that pumps out 137 hp (102 kW / 139 PS) and 162 lb-ft (219 Nm) of torque. There could also be a turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder that develops 155 hp (115 kW / 157 PS) and 174 lb-ft (236 Nm) of torque. We could also expect front- and all-wheel drive variants as well as a nine-speed automatic and a continuously variable transmission.
There’s no word on when the model could be approved but, if it does get the go ahead, it might arrive relatively soon as the powertrains and platform are already in existence.
Pricing wouldn’t be much of a surprise either as the model would slot between the Trailblazer and Encore GX. This likely means a starting price of around $23,000.
