Hyundai is investigating complaints from owners of the Palisade regarding a pungent smell emanating from the cabin of the brand’s flagship SUV.
For a number of months, Palisade owners have been complaining online about a foul odor in the vehicle. The team at Cars.com, who just so happen to own a long-term Palisade for testing, has also experienced the smell, writing that “it’s a sharp chemical odor with a dash of something organic like garlic or rotten produce.” The publication adds the smell started during 90-degree days experienced in the Chicago area.
There are differing claims about where the smell may be coming from. Many of the owners complaining about the issue own Palisade models equipped with the available Nappa leather and suggest getting relief from the smell by replacing or deep-cleaning the head restraints. However, Cars.com thinks the odor could be coming from inside the seats.

Cars.com writes that Hyundai Motors America is looking to replace the head restraints of its long-term Palisade but, due to a backorder, it has been waiting for more than two months. This may not solve the issue, however, as the service director of the publication’s local Hyundai dealership agreed the smell seemed to be coming from the seatbacks.
Either way, Hyundai has announced that it is aware of concern amongst owners and is investigating the issue.
“We are aware of the concern and are currently in the midst of the investigation, which includes identifying and validating a fix,” Hyundai said in a statement to The Drive. “Once a repair method is confirmed effective a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) will be released to provide direction to our dealer body on how to resolve the concern.”
