Next-Generation 2022 Mercedes SL Looks Really Promising In Fresh Spy Shots

Back in January, we were able to show you the first photos of the next-generation Mercedes SL-Class in prototype form.

The car hasn’t been seen since but our photographers have now caught a 2022 Mercedes SL test vehicle once again. Since development is still in the early stages, the bodywork continues to be fully covered with camouflage.

Still, we can spot details like the sleek recessed headlights, bold grille and slim horizontal taillights. SL fans will no doubt notice the fabric soft top first, as the next-generation SL will ditch the folding metal roof of the current generation.

Seen from the side, the 2022 Mercedes SL appears more athletic and better proportioned, as well as less busy than before. These photos definitely make us want to see what’s beneath that camouflage.

Now, the most important thing you need to know about the next-generation SL is it will be developed by Mercedes-AMG alongside the next GT coupe. This means both models will utilize the Modular Sports Architecture (MSA). Factor in the soft top and the 2022 SL promises to be a major departure from its predecessors.

According to Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers, the new SL-Class will be “far sportier” than the current car, offering a “perfect compromise between driving dynamics and comfort because it’s still kind of a cruiser, too.”

It may not be entitled to be classified as a roadster anymore, as reports claim it will have two small but usable rear seats, effectively becoming a 2+2 convertible sports car. This will make it a successor for both the current SL and the S-Class Cabriolet which won’t be renewed for another generation.

Engine options are expected to include a 435 PS (429 HP) 3.0-liter turbo straight-six and a 522 PS (515 HP) 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The SL63 should offer 612 PS (604 HP) from AMG’s version of the 4.0-liter V8 and the SL73 moniker could return in the form of a 800 PS (789 HP) plug-in hybrid.

The next-generation Mercedes SL is expected to debut in 2021 which likely means it will be sold as a 2022 model.
