If you consider yourself a bit of an amateur photographer or just want to learn how to take some nice pictures of your car with a smartphone, this new video from Porsche might be perfect for you.

This clip forms part of the new Porsche Passion School series and focuses on smartphone photography. While the video is about snapping pictures of Porsches, and specifically the all-electric Taycan, all of these principles can be used when photographing any type of car.

The first thing to do when taking car photos with your smartphone is to switch the camera application into manual mode. This will give you control over things like the exposure and focus and allow you to take high-quality photos with far less effort than using a traditional DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Another key aspect in taking the perfect photo is the location, which the presenter in this clip notes that it is the key. You should take photos that allow the location and the car to work together in order to capture the essence of the area. You can do this by capturing tight and wide-angle photos of the car from a host of different angles. You can also shoot from low down to exaggerate a car’s presence or from high up to bring out small details.

Lighting is another important thing to consider. Ideally, you don’t want shadows covering parts of the car and want to position it at an angle to the light source. If you want to get particularly creative, think about taking photos at sunrise or sunset, typically known as the ‘Golden Hours’, when the sun is softer and lower in the sky.
