A recent test of the 2020 BMW M8 Competition reveals that it is not just the most accelerative BMW on the market but it also one of the quickest cars currently on sale.
Powering the M8 Competition is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 616 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. Mated to this engine is an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and an M-tuned xDrive all-wheel drive system.
BMW’s official claim is that the M8 Competition needs 3 seconds to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) and 3.2 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h). However, while Car and Driver was recently testing the luxury grand tourer, they were able to launch it to 60 mph in an incredible 2.5 seconds.

It’s important to note that Car and Driver uses a 1-foot rollout when testing the acceleration of cars. This practice comes from the drag strip and means timing gear doesn’t kick in until the car has traveled the first foot. Using rollout improves a vehicle’s acceleration to 60 mph by an average of about 0.1 seconds. Even accounting for rollout, it is obvious the M8 Competition is capable of acceleration that beggars belief, particularly for a vehicle that weighs 4,251 lbs (1,928 kg).
During its timing, Car and Driver also saw the car hit 100 mph (160 km/h) in 6.3 seconds, 150 mph (241 km/h) in 15.5 seconds and 170 mph (273 km/h) in 22 seconds. As proof of how important launch control systems are nowadays, the M8 Competition needs a mere 3.5 seconds to accelerate from 5 mph (8 km/h) to 60 mph – plus it recorded a best quarter-mile time of 10.7 seconds at 129 mph (207.6 km/h).
