Volvo has expanded the XC40 range with the introduction of the new T4 plug-in hybrid and two mild-hybrid powertrains that replace the regular T4 and T5 gasoline engines.
Dubbed the XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T4, the electrified option slots under the T5 PHEV and is already on sale in the United Kingdom. It’s available in two trim levels, R-Design and Inscription, with customer deliveries commencing in October. Pricing starts at £39,130 ($51,421) and £39,475 ($51,875) respectively.
Both of them feature the 127 HP (129 PS / 95 kW) 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol unit and an 81 HP (82 PS / 60 kW) electric motor, connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The 10.7 kWh battery gives it an electric range of up to 27 miles (43 km), while the fuel economy and CO2 emissions in the WLTP cycle are 134.5 mpg UK (112 mpg US / 2.1 l/100 km) and 47 g/km.

Replacing the T4 and T5 petrol offerings are two new mild-hybrid powertrains. The B4 and B5, priced from £32,760 ($43,050) and £37,865 ($49,759) respectively, pack a 2.0-liter gasoline power unit, 48-volt battery, integrated starter generator and kinetic energy recovery system.
The lesser variant of the premium subcompact crossover is offered with 194 HP (197 PS / 145 kW) and either front- or all-wheel drive, while the higher spec model has 246 HP (250 PS / 184 kW) and all-wheel drive. The eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on both models.
The new electrified powertrains join the existing T5 plug-in hybrid, which offers a combined output of 258 HP, and the range-topping 402 HP XC40 Recharge P8 EV which offers 249 miles (400 km) of range.
