2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Brings Stronger Diesel, Optional Black Pack To Europe

Shortly after getting powertrain and equipment updates in Japan, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has been refreshed for European markets as well.

Headlining the changes is the upgraded 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine which now makes more power and torque – 204 PS (200 HP / 150 kW) at 3,000 – 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) at 1,600 – 2,800 rpm, respectively. That’s 27 PS (26 HP / 20 kW) and 50 Nm (36 lb-ft) more than the previous version.

As a result, the 2021 Land Cruiser Prado (sold simply as the Land Cruiser in Europe) accelerates 3 seconds more quickly from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 175 km/h (109 mph). Interestingly, the model sold in Russia and other former Soviet states makes slightly less power, namely 200 PS (197 HP / 147 kW).

At the same time, the average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have dropped by 0.7 l/100 km to 7.0 l/100 km (33.6 mpg US / 40.3 mpg UK) and 18 g/km to 192 g/km, respectively, thanks to the adoption of Toyota’s Stop & Start technology. The engine continues to be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to both axles via a standard 4WD system.

Besides the stronger engine, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado also gains an upgraded multimedia system with faster software and screen response, a multi-touch screen and a customizable Home view, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system comes with a one-box search facility, 3 years map care connected services and over-the-air map updates. Connected services also include live internet traffic reports and a Google online search engine.

On the safety front, Europe’s 2021 Land Cruiser Prado now features the second generation Toyota Safety Sense suite, which adds Pre-Collision System (PCS) with both night time pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.

Finally, the updated Land Cruiser Prado adds an optional Black Pack which brings unique front and rear bumper treatment with additional aero parts, a full dark chrome front grille and rear garnish, clear rear lamp clusters as well as black fog lamp bezels, door mirrors, door belt moldings and alloy wheels. Rounding out the package is an ‘Onyx Black’ badge.
