2021 Volkswagen Golf Variant And Alltrack Finally Arrive

Volkswagen has quietly unveiled the 2021 Golf Variant and Alltrack models.

Compared to the outgoing Golf Variant model, the new one is 182.28 inches (4.63 meters) long and has a 105.75-inch (2.68 meter) wheelbase, meaning it is longer than previously. The added length results in 1.5 inches of additional legroom and also sees cargo capacity increase from 21.37 cubic-feet (605 liters) to 21.58 cubic-feet (611 liters). Space increases to 57.99 cubic-feet (1,642 liters) with the rear seats folded down.

Elsewhere, the Golf 8 Variant lands with an available hands-free tailgate and a cargo area that includes bag hooks and fastening rings as well as two power sockets, one 12-volt socket and one 230-volt socket.

The Golf Variant will be offered with the same range of engines it is available with in hatchback form, meaning a handful of petrol and diesel powertrains. A new Golf R Variant is in the works and will come outfitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive.

Moving to the 2021 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, it has a similar overall shape to the Variant but, of course, has significantly more ground clearance and comes standard with a 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The Golf Alltrack also includes black plastic cladding across the body to add to its more rugged appeal. Few changes have been made to the interior of the Alltrack although it does feature distinctive embroidery on the seat backs.

A host of engines are also offered for the Golf Alltrack. It has a maximum towing capacity of 4,400 lbs (2,000 kg).

Sales of the new Golf Variant and Alltrack will start in late 2020 before landing in markets outside of Europe in 2021.
