Ford says the all-electric version of the F-150 will be much cheaper to own than an equivalent combustion engine variant.

While speaking with the media during the company’s announcement of a $700 million expansion of its Rouge complex to build the F-150 EV, Ford’s president of the Americans and International Markets Group, Kumar Galhotra, said the lifetime cost of ownership of the electric model will be roughly half that of a current-generation ICE F-150.

Galhotra made this estimate based on zero gas and oil usage, low electric charging rates, increased vehicle uptime and lower maintenance costs, Auto News reports.

“While other electric pickups are competing for lifestyle customers, the all-electric F-150 was designed and engineered for hardworking customers that need a truck to do a job,” Galhotra commented.

It is not just the lower cost of ownership that will make the electric pickup truck desirable though. Ford also confirmed during the event that it will have more horsepower and torque than any current F-150, meaning it will eclipse even the 2020 F-150 Raptor with its 450 hp and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm). It will also be the quickest accelerating version of the F-150, which is hardly a surprise.

Further discussing the electric truck, chief executive Jim Farley said: “F-Series pickups are the backbone of work and productivity across the country. And now we are preparing to build a fully electric version of America’s most popular vehicle, and it will be a seriously capable, purpose-built tool for serious truck customers.”
