Honda Australia has announced it will conduct a special lottery draw to determine who will be able to buy the 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition.
A mere 20 examples of the bright yellow Civic Type R Limited Edition are bound for the Australian market. Of these, 19 will be available for customers, while one, serial number AUS-001, will be used for promotional purposes.
In the months since the hot hatch’s overseas debut, more than 700 people have registered their interest in the special model through the Honda Australia website. This has prompted the automaker to establish a lottery system to determine the 19 lucky buyers.

Interested customers can enter the lottery between October 1 and October 31 and simply need to complete an entry form and agree to the terms and conditions of the competition. Those who have already registered their interest in the car will be contacted directly and invited to also enter the lottery. The draw will be held in November and winners will be required to sign a sales contract with a local Honda dealer and place a $5,000 deposit.
“With an extremely small number of Civic Type R Limited Editions available for our market, we wanted to present an equal opportunity for all customers keen to purchase one of these cars, irrespective of their location, dealership access or internet connection,” director of Honda Australia Stephen Collins said.
“In Canada, where 100 vehicles from the global production run of 1,020 units were available, the total allocation sold out in just four minutes after the online reservation process opened. We believe the lottery competition will give all Type R fans in Australia an equal chance to purchase one of these special models, while building the suspense in the way only a lottery draw can.”
The 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition will be sold locally with a drive away price of AU$70,000 (US$49,302), roughly AU$12,000 (US$8,451) more than the outgoing 2020 Civic Type R. Deliveries are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2021.
