If you are in the market for a fast family car from Mercedes-AMG, should you buy a GT 63 S or an E 63 S Estate?

Of the two, it is the E 63 S Estate that is the most practical and more suitable for use by a family. However, the GT 63 S has been designed as the ultimate super sedan and, even though it can match the E 63 S, is also quite practical.

In terms of power, both use the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which delivers 612 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque in the E 63 S and 639 hp and 663 lb-ft (900 Nm) in the GT 63 S. Both models sport an all-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Both the E 63 S Estate and GT 63 S are blisteringly quick off the line and are neck-and-neck down the quarter-mile. It ultimately comes down to just a couple of feet between the two, proving that, while the GT 63 S has a power and torque advantage, AMG’s super estate can more than hold its own against it.

In a series of rolling races held between the two, the GT 63 S proves to have a slight advantage and is able to initially pull away from the Estate, but as the speeds increase, the gap remains the same. The final head-to-head battle came in the form of a braking test where, once again, there were just a few inches separating the two.
