Elon Musk has disclosed that The Boring Company’s first ‘loop’ tunnel in Las Vegas is “almost done.”

The two tunnels being constructed by The Boring Company are located under the Las Vegas Convention Center and will allow visitors to the facility to travel from one end of the convention center to the other in less than two minutes, which is much faster than the 15-minute walk that’s usually required.

Digging of the tunnels was completed in May and the plan was for the loop system to be up and running for the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. However, it has since been confirmed that the event will instead be an all-online affair.

Nevertheless, the Las Vegas loop system is an important technical showcase for the company and, if Musk gets his way, will form just a small section of a loop system that could run under most of downtown Las Vegas. Initially, the Las Vegas Convention Center loop will connect to the Strip and, in August, The Boring Company won county approval to expand it to an underground station at the new Resorts World hotel.

A design proposal from the company shows the loop connecting to all major tourist destinations along the Strip, as well as two terminals at the McCarran International Airport.

The convention center loop system is costing $52.5 million and, once completed, will have the ability to transport up to 4,400 passengers per hour.
