VW and Electrify America announced their agreement to offer free unlimited charging to owners of the upcoming 2021 ID.4 electric SUV for three years.

In addition, VW continues the teasing campaign for the ID.4 electric SUV, this time by revealing the model’s innovative lighting solutions, which include a set of 3D LED taillights, a first for a VW model.

But let’s just go back to the free charging offer just for a bit; VW customers who lease or purchase the upcoming ID.4 electric SUV will receive three years of unlimited charging sessions in Electrify America’s charger network, which includes more than 470 charging stations and over 2,000 DC fast chargers with power levels up to 350 kW.

Electrify America’s network also includes a newly completed cross-country route, allowing EV drivers to travel from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles and is expected to expand to around 800 charging stations in total with around 3,500 DC fast chargers by December 2021.

Now, if you’re wondering about the small print, here’s what VW says:

“Non-transferable. Not available for commercial use, such as ridesharing. Requires Electrify America account, app, and acceptance of Terms of Use. After user-initiated charge session stop or vehicle reaches full charge, and 10-min grace period, Idle Fees will apply and user is responsible. In the event of suspected fraud or abuse or other unforeseen events, Volkswagen of America may discontinue or modify the offer in its sole discretion.”

All about the LEDs

VW’s latest teaser for the ID.4 is all about the model’s light design; the carmaker revealed that the production ID.4 will be the first VW to feature 3D LED taillights as an option, in addition to the also optional LED matrix headlights.

The ID.4’s 3D LED taillights consist of nine fiber-optic cable surfaces that appear to be floating in front of a black background and can project fast-paced animations and will give drivers the option between two “design modes”. Klaus Zyciora, Volkswagen Group Head of Design explains that “the light in the ID.4 is not an end in itself. It fulfills vital functions in an intelligent way and represents an integral element of the exterior design.”

VW is going to reveal the new ID.4 in its full production guise on September 23, so stay tuned.
