The Polestar 1 isn’t just one of the most beautiful cars currently on sale, but it is also a very impressive performer and very nice to drive.

The plug-in hybrid only recently touched down in the United States and Doug DeMuro had the opportunity to put it through its paces. While he only appears to have had the chance to drive it along some rather boring Californian highways, he is able to get a good idea of what it is like, while also spending a good amount of time discussing the interior, the exterior styling, and the powertrain.

It is the exterior of the Polestar 1 that first captures your attention. It is virtually identical to the Volvo Coupe Concept from back in 2013 and that is no bad thing. The front end includes a set of sleek headlights with ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights, while the rear is particularly stunning thanks to the aggressive taillights and a lack of aggressive splitters and wings that so many other modern performance cars now have.

The interior is equally as special and shares most of its parts with other Volvo models. As such, it features the Swedish automaker’s familiar vertical infotainment system as well as a host of familiar Volvo buttons, switches, and more.

Powering the Polestar 1 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine that works alongside a pair of electric motors and a 34 kWh battery pack. This powertrain is good for a total of 619 hp and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque.
