Depending on the overall condition, one could pick up a functional first-gen Volkswagen Golf for anywhere between €500 to €1,000 ($585-$1,170) in Europe.
This one, however, is a bit more special, as it has only 738 miles (1,188 km) on the odometer, so it is bound to fetch more than your run-of-the-mill Mk1 Golf when it hits the NEC Classic online auction on November 13-14.
VW Golf History: 1974-1983 Mk1 Set The Gold Standard For Compact Hatchbacks
Listed by SilverstoneAuctions, this right-hand drive example was bought as a ‘grey import’ from mainland Europe in 1980. The man commissioned for the job drove it to the United Kingdom and handed the keys over to its first owner, who was no stranger to the model, as they owned another one, but in a different color – white.
The initial plan was to keep the green-finished example around until the white one died, but the latter turned out to be very sturdy, so the newer hatchback spent most of its life indoors. In fact, the auction house reports that it was driven twice by its first owner: once to the mechanic and once to register it for the first time in 1999! It was then sold to a collector who treated it accordingly and it was even featured in a car magazine.
Considering that it has very few miles on the clock and presents itself in a beautiful, all-original condition, this Golf Mk1 might even retain some of that new car smell. The question is, how much would it be worth to you?
