As the replacement to the Kia Optima, the 2021 K5 has a lot to live up to, and in order to see if the mid-range GT-Line model is up to the class’ standards, The Straight Pipes put one to the test in the Great White North.
Thanks to Kia Motors America, we had the opportunity to test out both the K5 GT-Line and the luxurious K5 EX models side-by-side a couple of months ago – and we were thoroughly impressed by both.
Underpinning the K5 is the automaker’s all-new N3 platform and the GT-Line model is outfitted with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder producing 180 hp and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque. This engine is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels as standard, although the example tested here was equipped with the optional all-wheel drive system.

In a straight-line, the K5 GT-Line isn’t what you’d call fast. However, it offers respectable straight-line performance and the transmission performs well. In the corners, it handles quite well, even though the tires are prone to squealing if you push a little too hard.
Before long, the Kia K5 family will become more desirable with the availability of the flagship GT model. This variant will feature a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder pumping out 290 hp and 311 lb-ft (421 Nm) of torque. Paired to this engine will be an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint will take 5.8 seconds.
