The 2020 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) was supposed to take place earlier this year between from April 10 to 19.
In March, however, the show was postponed for August 28-September 6 because of the coronavirus pandemic. As we all know, that did not happen either, with organizers announcing in May that the 2020 edition of NYIAS was gone for good.
Since then, organizers have focused on the 2021 event, trying to find the best possible place in the calendar. Today, they announced that the 2021 show dates will be August 20-29, preceded by a press day on August 19. That’s four months later than the originally planned dates of April 2-11, 2021.

“Looking at all the issues we’re facing, we have determined that moving the dates of the 2021 NYIAS to August is not only the responsible thing to do, but it puts us in a unique position to occupy the expanded Javits Center with an additional 100,000 sq. ft. of new exhibit space on the main floor and much more,” Mark Schienberg, president of the New York Auto Show, said in a statement.
The larger convention center adds an ultra-modern 53,000 square-foot special event space that will be the largest of its kind in the Northeast. Offering incredible views of the Hudson River, the space can accommodate up to 5,000 guests for any special occasion. Also included in the expansion plan is a 480,000 square-foot, 4-level marshaling facility, 27 new loading docks, 107,000 sq. ft. of new meeting room space, 113,000 sq. ft. of pre-function space, a rooftop pavilion accommodating 1,500 guests and a one-acre rooftop farm.
Organizers say the 2021 show will feature an expanded electric vehicle exhibit including displays and a test track. With this latest announcement, the 2021 U.S. major auto show season will start in May with the LA Auto Show, continue in August with NYIAS and end in September with the Detroit Auto Show.
