Development on the next Mercedes C-Class is at full speed, with our spies catching yet another heavily camouflaged test car but this time it’s a high-performance AMG variant.
We do know that this isn’t a 63-series model since the test car doesn’t use the squared exhaust pipes, featuring instead a pair of square pipes on each side of the rear diffuser. The new model is expected to adopt the C 53 moniker, replacing the outgoing C 43 in the range.

The biggest news reportedly will come from under the skin, as AMG is planning to ditch the biturbo V6 of the current C 43 in favor of a hybrid four-cylinder powertrain.
If reports are proved to be true, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C 53 is going to pair a 2.0-liter turbo four-pot, most likely an updated version of the unit that powers the current A 45, with an electric motor and all-wheel-drive, as part of AMG’s decision to stick with four-cylinder engines for the new C-Class.
The next Mercedes-AMG C 63 is also included in this plan, expected to ditch the mighty V8 for a similar hybrid powertrain that will probably employ a more powerful electric motor.
The next-generation C-Class will adopt many design features of the new S-Class, as it has become a tradition for the German carmaker. The same will be applied for the interior, which was revealed in earlier spy shots to feature a big digital instrument cluster and a portrait-oriented infotainment system, just like the new Mercedes S-Class.
It’s safe to expect that pretty much every powertrain choice with the new Mercedes C-Class will employ some form of electrification, from mild-hybrid 48-volt base models all the way to plug-in hybrid versions with more than enough EV range for your daily driving.
