Mercedes-AMG has been spied testing the facelifted CLS 53 ahead of an expected debut next year.
This particular prototype is sporting some camouflage across the front fascia that hides some tweaks made to the bumper, including re-designed air intakes. In addition, the 2021 CLS 53 is pictured with a new mesh design in the front grille. The front parking sensors have also been re-positioned.

While this tester is sporting the same headlights as the current model, we think it’s inevitable the car will get new headlights when it reaches the production line. It will be a similar story for the rear. While this prototype has no noticeable differences at the rear from the current model, Mercedes should fit the facelifted CLS 53 with a new rear bumper and new taillights.
As for the mild-hybrid powertrain, it will adopt the same small tweaks with the E53 AMG model. The biggest change is the addition of the ‘Drift Mode’, which shuts down the all-wheel-drive system, sending power only to the rear axle. In the facelifted E53, the Drift Mode is an optional feature bundled together with a set of carbon-ceramic brakes.
The CLS 53 4Matic+ is powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six turbocharged engine mated to an EQ Boost starter-alternator and a 48-volt electrical system. The engine also features an electric compressor to eliminate turbo lag in addition to a normal turbocharger. All up, the car is rated at 435 HP and 383 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque. Coupled to the engine is a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends power through all four wheels.
As this is only a mid-life facelift, we don’t expect many more differences, other than the addition of the latest MBUX infotainment system and AMG’s fancy new steering wheel with haptic controls.
