Subaru hosted the SubieFest over the weekend, and attendees got a sneak peek of the new generation BRZ.
Teased on social media for the first time, the sports car, which will once again be a twin to the Toyota 86, will officially premiere this fall, and is marketed as a 2022 model year, meaning that it should start arriving at dealers across the U.S. in the second half of 2021.
The teaser is not that revealing, partially showing a camouflaged prototype’s 10-spoke front left wheel and an air vent on the fender. Nonetheless, we have a pretty good image of what we should expect from previous spy shots, meaning a cleaner design, with a big front grille and new lighting units at both ends.

It appears that the new sports car will use an updated version of the current platform for the new 86/BRZ twins, which seems to retain the same rear suspension, albeit probably with a few tweaks meant to make them even more responsive.
Power might come from Subaru’s 2.4-liter turbocharged four found in the Ascent and Legacy. This engine uses a top-mount intercooler and puts out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet (376 Nm) of torque, and might be hooked up to a standard manual transmission, or an optional auto ‘box. The rumored STi variants might arrive with as much as 300 HP.
There is always the chance, though, that the Japanese companies might continue to offer the duo with a naturally aspirated unit, like the current generation, although they’d have to modify it, or else that would keep them away from markets such as Europe, as they would not meet the stricter emission regulations.
