Today is a big day for GM as it will unveil the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck. However, that’s not the only major announcement the U.S. automaker has in store.
In a short statement posted on its media website, GM said it would be making “a major U.S. manufacturing investment announcement” on October 20, at 11 a.m. ET. The automaker did not release further details, but did provide a link where the virtual media event will be broadcast live.
What’s interesting is that the GMC Hummer EV world debut is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, so the two announcements are most likely not related.

According to reports from U.S. media, the manufacturing announcement is probably related to GM’s plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and potentially other sites. According to The Detroit News, GM planned to begin building the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV in Spring Hill, with production expected to commence in late 2022. Spring Hill would therefore become GM’s third EV plant in the U.S., following Michigan’s Orion Assembly (Chevrolet Bolt) and Detroit-Hamtramck (GMC Hummer EV).
GM could also move production of vehicles to other plants and announce new investments in other locations today. Some electric vehicle production could be announced for a factory in Mexico, AutoForecast Solutions said, as reported by Reuters.
The U.S. automaker has already announced plans to spend $2.5 billion to overhaul and retool the Detroit-Hamtramck factory to build the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck, an automated robotaxi, and other vehicles. GM formally renamed the plant “Factory Zero”, a reference to CEO Mary Barra’s goal of “zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.”
By 2025, GM plans to invest $20 billion in new electric vehicles and EV battery technology.
