Mercedes-Benz has made quite a few off-roaders in recent years, and the EQC 4×4² concept unveiled last week is one of its most unique.

While the one-off is based on the road-legal EQC, it follows in the footsteps of the E 400 All-Terrain 4×4² concept from a few years ago. As such, it stands roughly 20 cm taller than a regular road-going model and has 293 mm of ground clearance.

To put the concept to the test, the car manufacturer recently headed to Italy with a handful of social media influencers and took the EQC 4×4² off-roading near the city of Bardoneche. This video from YouTuber Benjamin Ortega shows the Merc being tested through a series of extremely difficult conditions and across some very treacherous surfaces, including up and down some mountain roads covered in snow.

The key to the EQC 4×4²’s off-road credentials are its new multilink portal axles that don’t just increase the ride height but ensure the electric SUV can cross water up to 40 cm deep while also having approach and departure angles of 31.8 and 33 degrees. The breakover angle has also been increased by 12.6 degrees to 24.2, while the 285/50 R20 tires further add to the vehicle’s abilities.

The powertrain of the EQC 4×4² remains unchanged from the regular, road-going EQC 400. As such, it has a pair of electric motors that produce 408 hp and 562 lb-ft (762 Nm) of torque and are powered by an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
